Susy and Ryan

We first met Susy and Ryan at the Starbuck’s on Virginia and California in downtown Reno. It’s surprising how many brides and grooms we meet at a Starbuck’s or Java Jungle, which a is coffee shop downtown. Coffee places sort’ve seem like the perfect place to meet and break the ice.

After all, who doesn’t like coffee. Okay, a lot of people, but the atmosphere in a coffee shop really does lend itself to a first meeting.

Susy told us she wanted us to be her wedding photographers, because she was a cake maker and when she did the cake at a recent wedding, Vesta and I were the photographers and she liked how we photographed everything, including her and her preparations as she set up the cake. She wanted us to do that for her, photograph everything.

And we do photograph everything, absolutely everything. Sometimes we’re accused of taking too many pictures, but we believe a bride can’t have too many photographs of her special day. Besides, we don’t always know, can’t always know, every little thing which is important to a bride. So we shoot everything we can.

We photograph the flowers, the bride’s dress, her shoes, the table setup and the bunting in the reception hall, every detail we see.

Susy’s wedding was at the Chism House on Second Street, just west of Downtown. We live off Second Street, so it was only a short ride for us. The grounds are nice and they have a beautiful room in their main house where the bride and her bridesmaids can get their hair and makeup done. Upstairs, they have a smaller room where the groom and his groomsmen can get into their wedding clothes.

Both Susy and Ryan got ready at the Chism house, so you can get an idea of these rooms in the photos below. It really is a very nice venue with wonderful facilities. As usual, Vesta photographed the bride and I did the groom.

Vesta takes some of the most intimate photos we take on a brides special day and oftentimes I wish I was in the room with her when the bride is getting ready, but we’ve learned over time that we get better photos if I’m not in the room. Most brides are more comfortable with a female photographer when they’re getting dressed.

On the plus side, I get to hang out with the groom and his groomsmen while they’re getting ready and that oftentimes involves quite a bit of waiting, as they can usually get into their wedding duds in something like ten or fifteen minutes. But I don’t mind the waiting, it’s relaxing and I usually get to know the groom and his crew pretty well, which often leads to me getting better photographs throughout the day.

As usual, I asked the minister if he had any problems with photographers. You know, the usual questions, did he care about flash, could we get behind him and shoot without bothering him, did he care if I got close.

“You can do whatever you want,” he said, “but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t get right in my face.”

I couldn’t help but smile. It’s always easier when the minister is a nice guy and most of them are, but sadly, we’ve met a couple stinkers and when that happens we wonder why they just don’t get another job, but this guy was great.

The ceremony started right on time, Susy’s daughter was a beautiful flower girl, Susy was a beautiful bride and Ryan was a handsome groom. The light, as I said, was nice, almost perfect light for a wedding photographer. Vesta cried during the ceremony, but she still kept taking pictures.

After the ceremony, we took the obligatory wedding photos of the bride and groom with their wedding party and their family and friends, then it was on to the reception, where we took over five hundred pictures.

The light was just perfect. The guests were happy. The food was great. The Chism House and its grounds made for a perfect backdrop for our photographs. If you’re getting married in Reno and you’re looking for a venue, you could do far, far worse than the Chism House.

First off, if you want great pictures, that place will make life a whole lot easier for your wedding photographer, especially if you time the ceremony with the setting sun. And secondly, the staff there are very efficient and very friendly. And lastly, the grounds are gorgeous. Chism House is historic Reno at it’s finest and it’s a beautiful place for a marriage.
