Marian and Nema

Vesta decided she didn’t want to take her pride and joy, (Canon 5d3) out to Burning Man, so she ran an add in the wanted part of Craigslist, advertising for an older Canon 40 or 50D to take out to the Playa and Nema answered, saying he wasn’t looking for a camera, but he was looking for a wedding photographer.

Turns out he and his bride to be were getting married by the Temple. So Vesta responded and he hired us. That was way cool.

Usually we have to drive to a wedding, but since we were going to be there anyway, it was like it was coming to us and it did on a gorgeous early September morning.

The above portrait is the first photograph we made when we met Nema and Marian at the Burning Man Temple and I knew, just as I clicked the shutter, that I had a portrait I was going to love.

The way Nema is looking upward and out of the photograph reminds me of the kind of propaganda posters the Soviet Union used to churn out. You know, the kind of poster that had forward looking young people, supposedly looking to the future with the hammer and cycle on a red background behind them.

Those may have been posters designed to promote a kind of government all those reading this thinks stinks, but they were pretty gosh darned good, artistic wise. They were art. And this photograph is too, I think so anyway, but then I’m probably biased.

And you know, I think it’s a good photo to start off the session, because it was taken out on the Playa at Burning Man and one could argue that Burning Man is about a lifestyle and maybe even a left leaning socialistic lifestyle and so it does sorta fit.

And I might even be one to argue that, because the burning man lifestyle really works, but only for a week.for a week. Going out there and living without inhibitions, without government rules and restrictions, being able to do whatever you want as long as you don’t hurt anyone. Well, it’s a great vacation.

But when it’s over, we go back to real life, where we have to earn a living and educate our kids and vote and do all the other stuff you have to do to get by in the world. Burning Man is a vacation, it’s not about real life. We don’t use money out there, but it’s only for a week. Some people don’t even where clothes out there, but it’s only for a week. Some people drink all day, some just wander and take it all in, but it’s only for a week.

When it’s over we go home and anticipate all year long how were going to have even a better time next year.

But all that being said, the Playa, during Burning Man, is a wonderful time and place for a wedding.
